Part-time 3 hours ago Full Job Description Duties As a Physical Scientist, you will perform the following duties:
Develop scientific models to advance numerical simulation of hydrological cycles and/or land-atmosphere and land-ocean interactions.
Analyze observations, including remotely sensed datasets, with advanced statistical methods to evaluate climate models concerning land hydrology.
Support scientific research and data availability to the climate community.
Improve prediction and projection of hydrological aspects of the climate system.
Contribute to developing land models, including soil water, rivers, streams, reservoirs, lakes, and snow, to advance scientific understanding of water exchanges among the atmosphere, land, oceans, and land cryosphere.
Develop algorithms, code, and large-scale software packages.
Utilize High Performance Computing (HPC) platforms, including acceleration of numerical simulations of the Earth System models and/or application of machine learning to enhance the algorithms.
Assist in integrating model output into the scientific diagnostics and model analysis workflows.
Reduce uncertainty in the prediction of future climate with a focus on the enhancement of components of Earth system models that are relevant for characterization of hydroclimate risks and extremes affecting society, seasonal prediction forecasts, and the understanding of regional and global climate change.
Requirements Conditions of Employment This position will be filled under the DOC Alternative Personnel Systems (CAPS).
This system replace the Federal GS pay plan and structure.
Under CAPS, positions are classified by career, pay plan, and pay band.
The ZP-3 is equivalent to the GS-11/12.

Degree:
Physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.

Combination of education and
Experience:
education equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
AND SPECIALIZED
Experience:
Applicants must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and responsibility to the next lower grade level in the Federal Service.
Specialized experience is experience that has equipped the applicant with the particular competencies/knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position.
This experience need not have been in the federal government.

Experience:
In addition to meeting the Basic Requirements above, applicants must also possess one full year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to the ZP-2 or GS-09 in the Federal service.
Specialized experience MUST include all of the following:
Participating in the development and/or enhancement of Earth System, climate or land models; Performing statistical analyses of Earth System model output and/or large-scale observations and/or land models; and Implementing algorithms, code, and large scale software using programming languages (e.

Fortran90, C, Python, Perl, or Shell, etc.

OR SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION:
3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.

degree in a directly related field or Ph.

in a directly related field or equivalent doctoral degree in a directly related field.
OR COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND
Experience:
A combination of related graduate education and specialized experience as described above.

Only graduate education in excess of two years is qualifying for combination.
